Poor Official Spokesperson

So difficult to fib when the video is being watched worldwide.

If anyone hasn’t seen it yet, here is one of dozens of videos of the the UC Davis police at work:

Apparently some students who had covered their faces had pepperspray put directly onto their faces and mouths once they were taken by the officers. Two had to be hospitalized.

And the guy covering the crowd with the gun up on his shoulder doesn’t get any mention at all.

Here’s the official UC Davis account of the event:

“UC Davis spokeswoman Claudia Morain told CNN that 25 tents were in place Friday afternoon — despite fliers explaining the campus prohibits overnight camping. It does so for security and health reasons, Katehi said….

A group of about a dozen protesters sat on a path with their arms interlocked as police moved in to remove additional tents. Most of the protesters had their heads down.

At one point, protesters encircled the officers and blocked them from leaving, Morain said.

Cut off from backup, the officers determined the situation was not safe and asked people several times to make room, Morain said. One officer used pepper spray when a couple of protesters and some of the 200 bystanders moved in, she added.

Does the video appear to show protestors “moving in” on the spraying officer?

Does he appear to be in any conceivable danger when he is spraying the sitting students?

Just asking.

  1. UGH. This makes me SO angry. So so so so angry.
If I could get over and join the protests I sure would. And I would stick a flower in their pepper spray nozzles. Or some other nozzle.

  2. God, I love our young people.

  3. This made me cry. for a few reasons.

  4. After seeing that video I wrote a letter, paper, not email, to the Chancellor of the Davis campus. I’m an alumn of the school, and every year the alumni association bugs me for money: so I told her no way will I send money to support this sort of thing. Fire the officer who sprayed those kids with pepper spray immediately. Stop asking the students to carry the budget shortfall on their backs, and take a salary reduction herself—UC administrators get paid obscene amounts, and there are too many of them anyway.

But I am so angry. It doesn’t surprise me that the Chancellor had to sneak out of the campus after her press conference was shut down by protesters yesterday. If she doesn’t act forcefully against the campus police, she’s going to have to step down herself.

This is an outrage. I’m appalled by the actions of the police just about everywhere in this country. What have we become?
