Road Trip!

Flamingo Dancer started it:

So after a stop for lunch in Hobart, Tasmania, let’s have a looooong bit of a drive up to Washington, California. We can spent the afternoon in the deep woods, soaking up the quiet.

Then onto the next stop?

Washington is up in the Gold Country, past Grass Valley, past Nevada City. But Nevada City is a good place to stay, unless you want to camp.

There are (slightly too cute and expensive) B&Bs, and some not-to pricey hotels. Then you drive out past the town into the mountains, following the Yuba River:

The place we used to go was a campground named River Rest. Some people live there in campers year round, and some people just turn up and camp. And you can come for just the day.  It’s a handy stop because you can park your car, and there are bathrooms and firepits and a great swimming hole:

Beautiful clear water, just from off the mountains, and all very empty and quiet.

We used to drive up with my late friend Other Laura and stay a couple of nights when Sair was a kid. I haven’t thought of going back; somehow I’m not sure how to do it with just us. As if we’d be bumping into our old selves.

But maybe next summer.

If Laura is a ghost there, she’d be a benevolent one.

  1. Beautiful photos. Your post reminds me of camping when my sons were young. Wow. I hadn’t thought about that in a long time. We fished a lot. Didn’t catch anything that I can remember, but it laid back and lazy and lots of fun.

  2. Those buildings are lovely. I’m not much into camping but the scenery looks beautiful.

  3. Wow. Just wow. I’m going to sit and just gaze longingly at those water pictures for a while…

What a beautiful place to visit! Lovely pictures. The third one looks like a terrific camping sight. I would like to gaze at the water, as Kzinti mentioned, and just relax. Sounds like a fun and scenic road trip.

  5. Very very nice! I’d love to go someplace like thies and just sit in the woods for 3 days or so!

    • You can sit on the rocks with your feet in the water, in the shade of the trees, sipping on a glass of wine and listening to the sounds of water.
      Next summer.

  6. yes, yes, YES. I’ll have what you are having!
