So where are all those unemployed MBAs?

Economic Recession Means Fewer Shark Attacks

Shark attacks are on the decline due to the current economic downturn, a biologist speculated today.

In 2008, attacks worldwide dipped to their lowest level in five years, a sign that Americans may be forgoing vacation trips to the beach, said ichthyologist George Burgess of the University of Florida.

Burgess is the director of the International Shark Attack File, a compilation of all known shark attacks that is administered by the American Elasmobranch Society and the Florida Museum of Natural History, on the UF campus.

The total number of shark attacks declined from 71 in 2007 to 59 in 2008, the fewest since 2003, when there were 57, said Burgess, who works at the museum.

  1. This happened to be on the radio this morning. The recession-depression is certainly having a wide wide wide impact and in areas one wouldn't necessarily even think of …

  2. That's odd. In Oz the numbers are up I think. (Certainly more in Sydney Harbor)Mind you ours carry clip boards and try to sell you land on a flood plain. It might be a statement about the different attitude. In Oz folk just give up and hit the beach.

  3. @petermcc – probably because of warmer water temps! there's plenty of coastal areas in the united states where the water is frigid or nearly so year-round. where one goes to the shore in a jacket even in august. ocean swims are dictated by said climate and water conditions.

  4. I can understand that. I'm much more likely to get in the water up North but down in Vic it's too darn cold.

  5. @patermcc – lol. i hear that! long ago, back when california was still reasonably sane, i lived in san francisco. and the only people in the water were the surfers in wet suits. in the "worst" of summer! 😀

  6. I love the real California beach look…wading with your feet in the water and a jacket on.

  7. That's me in Florida…..

  8. @Lord Kalvan – lol.

  9. @lauowolf – lol. not me. i'm a fish, swimmer & amateur body surfer. i loooooove giant waves and playing in them for hours. without getting frostbite. ;D

  10. Looks like the sharks have cut back on fast food expenditures……

  11. Oh noes…. all the sharks are staying home cos the the economy!

  12. Heeee……….sad, isn't it?
